For tomorrow: Anne Moody, Childhood

As you read and consider Anne Moody's description of early childhood, please pay attention to two themes.

1. How does Elsie (Anne's childhood name) come to understand the meaning of race and racial difference?  What is the power of whiteness?  And by extention, what does that say about her understanding of blackness?

2. In class yesterday, I painted a rather optimistic picture of the Black Metropolis.  This was a largely Northern phenomenon.  What is her experience in the South at this time?

You don't need to write out answers to these questions.  But these are the topics I would like to discuss.  You should bring your own topics.  What interests or intrigues you?  Are there passages that are troublesome or particularly insightful?
