The video is a rendition of David
Walker's appeal the man in the video is acting out excerpt from David Walker's appeal.
This is something I consider bonus material that relates to something that we
discussed in class. So far we have discussed concepts such as the United States
Constitution, and double consciousness. These Concepts can be demonstrated and
reflected in this video which is interpretation or reading of David Walker's
appeal to colored citizens of the world. I argue this is the essence of the
Double Consciousness Du Bois and others refer to and it can help facilitate our
conversation in class. Listening to David Walker it sounds as if he feels a
sense of Double Consciousness which is the correlation in how I am applying
this video and his appeal in general to our class. David Walker addresses the
feelings of double consciousness however doesn't explicitly diagnose his
feelings as he also indirectly addresses the Declaration of Independence. He
does directly address is the Constitution and the results it has had on a
people. Which is all of extreme relevance to this class and how African
Americans were asked to come together. David Walker's appeal is arguably one of
the most radical of all anti-slavery documents. His goal was for slaves to come
together and revolt against their masters. The goal of the appeal was to
instill Pride into its black readers and give hope that someday change would
come. In the first day of class I said four words describing black history was
religious-centered, dynamic, and I don't recall the other two words I use;
however, the other two I will use is underappreciated and triumphant. Prior to
reading the remaining materials required for the class I can venture to guess
that all of the materials all related back to those four concepts to some degree
in one way or another. Just looking at the schedule I know the movement, Civil
Rights and Jim Crow, liberation, the age of colorblindness, and Hip Hop
sections should all utilize these concepts for sure. This piece of material is
one of the reasons we celebrate black history it is because it represents
American history that being nationalism David Walker is calling for nationalism
which is one of the most celebrated characteristics of US history.
